It seems like it’s the season of extreme challenges at GNG Group.
Having never run an official race or any serious distance, Phil Whittell (GNG Group – Managing Director) was set a challenge by Mark Raven (GNG Group – Non-exec), to compete with him in a half marathon during 2019, to mark Phil’s 50th year. Mark is a seasoned runner having completed many full and half marathons from Leeds to Chicago!
They chose Berlin as it was a city they wanted to visit for its history and the course ran through historic landmarks such as; the Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie, and finishing through the Brandenburg gates.
Due to the unseasonal spring heatwave that weekend they certainly had a tough challenge for the 21km course, but with over 30,000 competing and crowds and bands on every stretch and corner it certainly helped carry them to a reasonable finish time. Mark managed an impressive 2 hours and Phil 2hrs 11mins, coached round the course by Henry Spencer.
After his achievement Phil said, “A few cold German Steins to celebrate and onto the next challenge! Definitely something everyone should push themselves to do, a 10km or half marathon and no better feeling of achievement if you’ve never run before!
At GNG Group we’re lucky to have business leaders that inspire their teams outside the workplace as well as within.
